It came with Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95 and the OEM release of Windows 95. It was a reworked version of Spyglass Mosaic, which Microsoft had licensed, like many other companies initiating browser development, from Spyglass Inc. Internet Explorer 1 made its debut on August 16, 1995. Although bearing a name similar to NCSA Mosaic, the Spyglass Mosaic had used the NCSA Mosaic source code sparingly. In late 1994, Microsoft licensed Spyglass Mosaic for a quarterly fee plus a percentage of Microsoft's non-Windows revenues for the software. When Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 released in 2021, Internet Explorer 11 was removed in both versions of Microsoft Windows with the replacement of Microsoft Edge. Internet Explorer 11 was still included, but was meant to be used for sites that do not work properly with the new rendering engine in Microsoft Edge. Windows 10 comes with a new web browser called Microsoft Edge. Versions of Internet Explorer for other operating systems have also been produced, including an embedded OEM version called Internet Explorer for Windows CE (IE CE), available for WinCE based platforms and currently based on IE6 Internet Explorer for Pocket PC, later rebranded Internet Explorer Mobile, which is made for Windows Mobile and Windows CE and remains in development alongside the more advanced desktop versions and the discontinued Internet Explorer for Mac and Internet Explorer for UNIX ( Solaris and HP-UX). Internet Explorer was originally planned to be removed from Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 in Europe, but Microsoft later dropped the plans, and instead included a browser ballot screen with the products, allowing users to select a different web browser if they wish. The latest release is Internet Explorer 11. Microsoft spent over $100 million per year on IE in the late 1990s, with over 1000 people working on it by 1999. Since its peak of popularity, its usage share has decreased to 55% due to rival web browsers, and is slowly trending downward. IE has been the most popular web browser since 1999, with up to 95% usage share during 2002/2003 with IE5 and IE6. Later versions were free downloads, or in service packs, and included in releases of Windows 95 and later versions of Windows. It was first released as part of the add-on package Microsoft Plus! for Windows 95, that year. It was part of the Microsoft Windows operating system, starting in 1995. You can go further down this road, though, to the point where each individual Big Key is itself a pierce of pertinent information. And this is the esteemed company in which Echoes sits. The collection of all the Big Keys together is information, though, and not a physical thing, so if you want, you can go win immediately from power on without having to solve any puzzles.Īgain, this is fine as long as the puzzles are good, and also as long as the story is good, which in Myst, they are. Once you have all the Big Keys, someone tells you how to open the Big Door, and you can go win. This is where you get something like Myst, where each Big Key you find (one in each self-contained area) comes tied to a little piece of story. So we need to disguise the Big Keys a little. Which is fine as long as the puzzles are good, which in the RHEM games, they are.īut not everyone wants to be boilerplate, because adventure games that aren’t RHEM also like to lean in heavy on the story and lore. There’s nothing to distract you from the core of the puzzles themselves. There’s nothing wrong with this sort of structure, but it’s very boilerplate. You need this list of physical things in your inventory, which you can only collect by traveling around and solving literally every puzzle in the game. In some games, like the RHEM series, the Big Keys are literal. Once you have them, you open the Big Door and then you win. But more abstractly than that, they usually involve there being a Big Door at the end, and there are some number of Big Keys you need to find. As as a series of puzzles, yes yes, and those puzzles sometimes masquerede as social or environmental interactions. Let’s consider for a moment how adventure games are usually structured. Why Echoes of the Eye is not as special as Outer Wilds was I’ll mark some minor spoilers when they become relevant, and then some big major ones when I start bitching about where I got stuck, but it will be safe to read until then. I’m going to try to avoid spoilers in this post, but that’s not going to be completely possible. And speculation is, having the two bundled together is going to make it more difficult for future players of Wilds to have the same transcendent experience I did. The fact is, I enjoyed Echoes less than I would have if it weren’t burried deep within Wilds. Its inclusion as DLC doesn’t really enhance Outer Wilds at all (except for one detail, which I’ll talk about at the end), but I worry that stapling the two together kind of detracts from both. Outer Wilds is the best of them, though, because it went beyond merely an excellent adventure game (which it was) and into the realm of one of life’s truly great gaming experiences.Įchoes of the Eye, meanwhile, is merely an excellent adventure game. It’s a puzzle adventure game, and my brain sort of catalogues it alongside Return of the Obra Dinn (which is more adventure game than puzzle) and Baba is You (which is pure puzzle all the way down) as a sort of late-’10s puzzle experience trifecta. Outer Wilds was an incredibly special experience, the kind of thing that only comes along very, very rarely. In fact, my goal with this post is to make the case that that’s what they should have been all along. Throughout this post I’m going to refer to Outer Wilds and it’s DLC expansion, Echoes of the Eye, as two different games. I had this playing the entire time I wrote this post, and thought maybe you’d enjoy playing it as you read. Outer Wilds OST – Travelers (All Instruments Join) The other multiplayer modes are based on various player versus player objectives, in which a player's character can be brought into a wide range of maps and game types to compete against other human players online. After the player has accumulated 10,000 auras (the in-game currency), they can participate in Village mode, which allocates them a portion of land in a separate map, in which they can build and upgrade various structures to create a functioning village that can further generate more currency for use in both the Village and Adventure modes. Like in single player, characters can gain experience and skill points to improve their attributes and skills. The main multiplayer component is the Adventure mode seven unique maps for up to eight players to accomplish given objectives cooperatively. Unlike at the start of the single player campaign, players are given the opportunity to choose the race and gender of their character, in addition to the smaller changes allowed in the single player character creator. The online multiplayer component is entirely separate from the single player game, meaning that upon first entering online play, players will create an entirely new base level character purely for use in multiplayer modes. Owing to the large number of outcomes, players can name and document their new creations. These mixtures can either be used to recover a player's health or magical reserve, to temporarily buff their skills or attributes, or to use against foes as poisons. Many others however are ingredients for potions that can be brewed by the player. Whilst some materials can be used in the forging/upgrading of weaponry and armor, others can be used in the creation of lethal devices such as traps or bombs. Materials can be gathered throughout the game world, either found in the wild, purchased from vendors, looted from fallen enemies or recovered from unneeded equipment. Players can also mix skills instead of focusing on one type of character build. Rather than having players choose a character's class and style of play, as they level up points are given to be spent on improving their four main stats endurance (health and damage), strength (combat), accuracy (ranged), and willpower (magic) while also unlocking and improving various other skills and abilities such as forging items, special combat moves, sneaking, spells and others. In addition players can also fast travel using magical teleportation fixtures found across the map.įrom the beginning of the single-player game, all players' characters begin at the base level. While players will travel across much of the landscape on foot, they are soon given the option to ride on horseback and even later, a chance to man the helm of a boat to sail across the seas between islands. Despite being non-linear, many areas of the land are populated by strong foes with higher levels than that of the player initially and as a result, players may want to explore them once their character has improved. Much of the in-game world can be fully explored from the beginning, regardless of how much the player has progressed through the main story arc. As is common in role-playing games, the player's character will level up by gaining experience points through completion of quests and defeating enemies. Two Worlds II is a real-time role-playing game that takes place in an open fantasy world where players take the role of a single character with whom they can explore and undertake quests.įrom the beginning players can customize the appearance of the protagonist such as shape of face and body, and skin colour. It was released on 9 November 2010 in Europe for Microsoft Windows, Mac OS X, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and on 25 January 2011 in North America for the same platforms. Two Worlds II is an action role-playing game developed by Polish developer Reality Pump and published by TopWare Interactive as a sequel to 2007's Two Worlds. Make sure your target is the maximum distance possible at your shooting range.Set up the firearm in a stable configuration aimed downrange at your target using sandbags or a machine rest.Make sure your scope has been zeroed for your rifle. To get consistent compensation, start with the adjustment knob or ring set on the stop past “infinity.” Some adjustment systems, such as a side-mounted turret, have knobs you can use to “re-zero” the mechanism. To measure the actual parallax compensation needed for a given distance and zoom, head out to a range with known distances and calibrate your parallax adjustment mechanism. Most tactical scopes are not long enough or powerful enough to exhibit parallax. Once the zoom is increased to 20x, it takes a very fine adjustment to completely eliminate it. Why is it so critical to get a precise compensation setting?īecause the amount of parallax increases with magnification, giving you a larger margin of error at higher powers if it is not precisely corrected.įor example, on a high-power variable 6-20x magnification scope, parallax appears easy to compensate for at the lower 6x magnification setting. I find it helpful to manually determine the proper setting at 50-yard increments and mark those settings on the scope. While helpful as a general starting place, these factory set markings are not always accurate. Some of these rings or turrets are marked with various distances, generally ranging from 50 yards to infinity, indicating the proper setting to eliminate parallax. High-power scopes are usually equipped with a side-mount turret, or adjustment ring located on the objective bell, so you can move the focal plane of the target and reticle and eliminate parallax. In high-power scopes used over long distances, you must compensate for parallax. Parallax is usually negligible or not present at all in most low-magnification tactical style scopes, as the scope is too short or the range is not long enough.ġx red-dot style scopes generally are parallax-free at any range.Įven mid-power hunting scopes have very little parallax, and many tactical models do not have parallax compensation, as it is impossible to quickly and accurately determine range in a dynamic tactical situation. The problem occurs when your line of sight is not exactly lined up, as the point of aim indicated by the reticle is now incorrect.īy eliminating parallax and having the target image and reticle on the same plane, you no longer have to have a precise line of sight: no matter what angle you are looking through, the scope at the reticle will still accurately indicate the correct point of aim. It is possible to have an accurately-placed reticle in the first scenario if you are looking through the scope with your line of sight exactly lined up with the reticle and target image. When the focal plane for the target image and the reticle are the same, no parallax adjustment is necessary. When the angle at which you are viewing the image through the eyepiece changes, the reticle position relative to the target image changes. The point where the focal lines cross and form an X is the focal plane for the target image. When shooting long distances, it is important to account for parallax. Actually, the US version is known as Super C, I guess because the name Contra was a bit controversial at the time, which I explained in my previous review. Now it’s time to take a look at the NES version released in 1990 in Japan and in the US…and the European version still has robots, it’s known as Probotector II: Return of the Evil Forces here, released in 1992. The music is a massive improvement it’s a lot more bombastic and a lot more action-heavy, it’s one of the best soundtracks in the Contra series so far. The graphics are fantastic, a lot of detail on the level design, and they have a lot of creativity which makes for a near timeless looking game. Though I’m too young for that kind of nostalgia when it comes to this game…then again, I grew up playing Contra more anyway. Maybe it’s just a preference of which one gave them the most nostalgia and childhood memories, who knows. I mean there are people who like this game, but the majority of gamers always talk about the first game. The game is very similar to the first game, maybe which is why it’s not so remembered or as beloved as the first game. This game is fun but it’s also kick your nuts difficult, return of the one-hit kills, return of shreds of bullets and return of pure manliness. In the overhead levels you can get shells, though I call them the Bay Bombs, using one of these will clear all the enemies with explosions upon explosions upon explosions until there’s nothing left, they’re fantastic for clearing bosses too. I kind of like this more because it’s a lot more immersive for an arcade title in the late 80’s and it’s a lot of fun. You still platform around and gunning everything, but this time though, the pseudo-3D and fixed screen segments have now been replaced with vertically-scrolling stages with an overhead viewpoint. Only this time, you can pick up the weapon again to make it powerful for more damage. You still have your machine gun, a spread gun, a bomb gun and a laser gun to take down the alien scum. The game is mostly the same as Contra, with new levels and near enough the same weapons to gun down enemies. So it’s up to Bill and Lance to do what you expect them to do…make peace and have a cup of tea and talk about how to make the galaxy a better place…nah, you just shoot them because this is Contra and Contra doesn’t screw around.
