At Bui Sushi, we skipped the classic rolls and instead found the seafood carpaccio to be the real hero, and for dessert, we tracked down Tra Di Noi’s rumored Strawberry Crostada, made from a recipe handed down to the restaurant’s owner by his Italian grandmother. We included some long-time favorites such as the sumptuous skirt steak with chimichurro from V’s restaurant simply because these can’t be missed, but we didn’t stop there. Truly, there are few bad choices when it comes to Malibu’s flourishing restaurant scene, but some are, undoubtedly, better than others.įor this issue, Malibu Magazine editors set out to put together the ultimate list of “Must-Try” dishes from our favorite Malibu restaurants. ![]() From Malibu institutions like Taverna Tony’s that serves hungry tourists and locals with some of the best Mediterranean food in the area and Sunlife Organics with its wide array of brightly colored smoothies to new-comer Caffee Luxxe which supplies locals with not just a killer cup of coffee, but also that laid-back coffee shop vibe, it can be hard to choose where to go, let alone what to order. Fresh berries and a zigzag of chocolate sauce accompanied the sponge cake “cup” cradling the mousse.While Malibu may seem like a small town in many respects, our quaint, beach-side home has an abundance of restaurants that rivals cities much larger in size and population. The candlelight evening revealed a decadent Chocolate Mousse approaching the table. While it was not our favorite course of the evening, the cauliflower/carrot mash that served as the foundation of the meal was a knockout. ![]() By the time the Red Snapper topped with white fig sauced in Muscato wine made an appearance, our appetites were primed. The meal was paced somewhere between the American version of dining and the lingering meals shared among Italians. Thankfully everything was timed beautifully, allowing us to digest a little in between courses. Gnocchi in Lobster Cream Sauce was light as a whisper and the standout in one of two pasta courses. After emptying our bowls, out came two more lined with perfect Gnocchi, light as a whisper, tossed in a luxuriant lobster sauce. Short Rib Rigatoni, with a sprinkling of cubed Ricotta Salata, was incredibly meaty and just rich enough. It was a light and fresh way to usher in the more substantial pasta courses. The Curly Endive, sliced mushroom, cucumber and cherry tomato tossed in lemony vinaigrette were speckled with red quinoa and piled onto a puddle of plain yogurt. Yogurt is more often associated with other cuisines despite its popularity in Italy. The Quinoa Salad sat atop an ingredient not often experienced in Italian restaurants. The salad course was an unexpected treat. The undercoat of spicy aioli with dabs of balsamic reduction worked well with these tender sea critters. Calamari were tender and light.Ī platter of Calamari arrived with just a touch of breading. The first sip boldly announced its rich nature, which continued to reveal itself as we got deeper into the chef’s tasting menu. ![]() Lucia, a Super-Tuscan produced by the Chrome Hearts family, was uncorked tableside. Under the umbrella of a pink sky, my dining companion Randy and I settled into our al fresco feast as children frolicked in the park nearby. Serving cuisine inspired by the Italian countryside, it is the little black dress of dining – apropos for every occasion whether it be a romantic dinner for two or a large family gathering. Psst… just between us, Tra di Noi is a cozy little gem tucked into the far reaches of the Malibu Country Mart.
